Motion Guidance Experiments with Scooter Cobot

چکیده
Cobots assist humans by mechanically guiding motion along software-defined paths or surfaces. Cobot design has been extensively studied previously. This paper reports the first systematic experimental study of motion guidance with a cobot. We investigated the movements of seven operators with the Scooter cobot in representative environments. Analysis of the force exerted by the operators and the trajectories reveals significant differences between guided movements (GM) and free movements (FM). While FM requires learning for each novel task, GM is optimal from the first trial: Less effort is required to move in GM than in FM; Movements in GM are faster, smoother, and require less back and forth correction than in FM. These advantages demonstrate the strength of the Cobot concept. The results further suggest that operators guided by the Scooter can handle objects in a more “open-loop” way than with a dumb trolley, and so perform faster and concentrate on other aspects of the manipulation task, potentially resulting in increased productivity and fewer injuries.

Cobots are a class of mechanically passive robotic devices, intended for direct physical collaboration with a human operator. The operator supplies all motive power while the cobot enforces software-defined guiding surfaces, or constraints. Cobots are intrinsically passive, safe devices. This is because, rather than employ powered actuators to produce constraint forces, cobots use “steerable” n...
متن کاملA Space CoBot for personal assistance in space stations
Microgravity environments inside inhabited space stations are particularly challenging for service robots, being quite different from Earth in various ways. In this paper we propose and discuss the design and applicability of a collaborative aerial robot, called Space CoBot, to provide personal assistance to astronauts in microgravity environments. The platform is based on a modular holonomic a...
متن کاملA Controller for Simulating Freedom of Motion for a Cobot
A method is presented for creating a controller to simulate free motion for a cobot. A cobot is a class of mechanically passive robotic devices, intended for direct physical collaboration with a human operator (Colgate, et al., 1996a). One common cobot application involves a person using the cobot’s endpoint to probe a virtual surface. This task requires that the user have freedom of motion whi...
متن کاملA General Framework for Cobot Control
A general framework is presented for the design and analysis of cobot controllers. Cobots are inherently passive robots intended for direct collaborative work with a human operator. While a human applies forces and moments, the controller guides motion by tuning the cobot’s set of continuously variable transmissions. In this paper, a path-following controller is developed that steers the cobot ...
متن کاملCobot implementation of virtual paths and 3D virtual surfaces
Cobots are devices for human/robot interaction, in which axes of motion are coupled to one another by computer-controlled continuously variable transmissions rather than individually driven by servomotors. We have recently built a cobot with a three-dimensional workspace and a 3-revolute parallelogram-type mechanism. Here we present control methods for the display of virtual surfaces and for fr...
